Gary Obermueller - Lincoln KS

Gary Krieg Obermueller, 74, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2019 in Westfall, Kan. He was born August 19, 1945 in Casper, Wyo. to Milfred August and Bernice Elizabeth (Krieg) Obermueller.

Gary grew up in Westfall, Kan. and graduated from Lincoln High School. He earned a degree in accounting from the University of Kansas in 1968 then went to work for the firm of Laventhol & Horwath in Kansas City, where he was an auditor and specialized in health care. In 1974, he married Diann Davis. They had three children, Sally, Andy and Kate. He later formed his own firm, Edwards & Obermueller, in Lincoln, Kan. In the early 1980s, he merged his practice with Baird Kurtz & Dobson in Wichita. In 1992, Gary became chief financial officer of Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kan. He later became chief financial officer of Physicians Home Health Care Affiliates. He engineered its sale to Gentiva Health and retired in 2008. He was a longtime Lincoln County farmer and rancher and enjoyed his regular trips home. 


Gary was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lincoln. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Helena, where he served as president of the congregation and was meticulous about usher duty, financial reports and lawn care. He had a heart for young people and cared deeply about confirmation and biblical education. He was proud of his work at the high school, mentoring students taking shop class.

Gary loved to tell stories and laugh with his friends and family. He had a good memory for names and appreciated family and community history. He was an avid bird hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He liked wildlife art and classic westerns. He was a world-class barbecuer and loved football and basketball. He was a one-man goodwill ambassador of the University of Kansas.  

Gary is survived by his wife, Shari McDonald of Helena, Mont.; daughter, Sally Berry (Kipper) of Medina, Ohio; son, Andy Obermueller (Jennifer) of Coeur d’Alene, Ida.; daughter, Kate Unruh (Kyle) of Nashville, Ten.; grandchildren, Madison and Spencer Berry, Laurel Obermueller, and Piper and Beckett Unruh. He was a proud stepfather to Jennifer Sokoloff (Greg) and their children Lucy and Sylvie and Brian McDonald (Tyra) and their children Liza and Emily. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Donna Head.

Visitation: 1-7 p.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at Parsons Funeral Home-Hall Chapel, Lincoln with family receiving friends 5-7 p.m.

Funeral service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lincoln with burial following in the church cemetery.
