9/28/1922 - 12/11/2015

Virgal Keith Schroeder, 93, Beverly, died Friday, December 11, 2015, at Memorial Hospital, McPherson, Kansas. He was born on the family farmstead northwest of Beverly on September 28, 1922, the fourth child of John and Minnie (Beckwith) Schroeder.

Virgal attended Beverly Grade School Rural High School. In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy and served four years as a first class aviation machinists mate. Most of this time was spent as an air crew member of a flight patrol squadron in the South Atlantic Fleet during World War II. After his discharge in 1946 he returned to the family farm. Virgal married Geneva ONeal on August 3, 1947, in Oklahoma City. They spent their 43 years of married life on the farmstead northwest of Beverly. To this union was born six children; Lonnie, Collin, Linda Teresa, Angela, Jeannine, and Tim. Geneva passed away in October 1990. Virgal married Rosalee (Mastellar) Judd of Beverly on December 20, 2004, in Florida. Farming and the cow herd were a very important part of his life. He was always trying to improve, being one of the first to introduce black Angus cattle to the county. Over 40 years he also worked on water wells and pumps. Windmills were his specialty in which he repaired or installed in Lincoln and the surrounding counties. Virgal enjoyed playing baseball and football in his younger years; hunting, fishing and playing cards his entire life. He also liked watching his children and grandchildren play sports and participate in school activities Virgal was known by neighbors, family, and friends for his sense of humor and being a jokester. No one was sacred, especially friends and grandsons. The more he jibed them the better he liked them. It was his way of saying he loved them.

Virgal was preceded in death by: his first wife, Geneve; infant sister Edna Lucille; infant daughter, Linda Teresa; brothers, Leo and Lloyd; and sister, Josephine Manning.

Survivors include: his wife, Rosie, of Beverly; daughters, Angela (Jim) Cantwell, Micanopy FL, and Jeannine (Ben) Cromwell, St Cloud FL; sons Lonnie (Nancy) McPherson, Collin (Debra) and Tim (Dora) both of Beverly; and sister, Naomi Erickson, Lincoln. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the Beverly Cemetery with Pastor Kaye Metzler of the Beverly United Methodist Church officiating. He will have military rites. A lunch and memorial get-together for family and friends will follow at the township hall located on the main street of Beverly.
