Roscoe "Leroy" Gilmour was born on October 6, 1927, to Clarence and Anna (Jacobs) Gilmour in Norman, OK. He was named after his Uncle Roscoe. He had two siblings: Ollibeth and Bille James, both deceased. His family moved to Wichita when he was two weeks old. He attended Carlton Elementary School and graduated from Wichita North in 1945. He recalled acting in a play in high school. Leroy entered the Merchant Marines out of high school, then enlisted in the Army a year later. Leroy was married to Emma Jane and to this union four children were born: Clair (Augusta, KS), Linda (near Esbon, KS), Debbie (Oklahoma City, OK) and Patricia (Wichita). During this time, LeRoy worked in a furniture store in Wichita. After the passing of Emma Jane, Leroy married Berba. He began crafting items such as pens and knives out of various woods and deer antlers. He and Verba went to craft shows to sell these items. Verba passed away and Leroy later married Alice, who also assisted him with his crafting business.

Besides his woodworking projects, he and his family enjoyed playing cards, particularly Pitch and Poker.
After two unsuccessful back surgeries, Leroy was admitted to Hilltop in May of 2009. He enjoyed attending most activities, especially BINGO, current events, music, church and the "Dudes".
